In New Orleans, Louisiana, DEA Agent Phil Broker (Jason Statham) is undercover in a biker gang, led by Danny T (Chuck Zito). During a bust on the gang's meth lab, Broker is revealed and Danny T is arrested, but his son Jojo
commits suicide by cop. A distraught Danny T swears revenge on Broker as the former is taken away. Disturbed by what happened, Broker quits his job. Two years later, Broker and his daughter Maddy (Izabela Vidovic) have moved to a small town where Maddy's deceased mother grew up. Broker has set up a contracting business with his friend Teedo (Omar Benson Miller). One day, Maddy gets into a schoolyard fight with classmate and bully Teddy Klum, and ends up breaking his nose. Broker and Teddy's parents are called by school psychologist Susan (Rachelle Lefevre), who tells Broker that Teddy is a special needs child, while his parents, Cassie (Kate Bosworth) and Jimmy (Marcus Hester), can be a handful. Broker tells Susan he has taught Maddy to defend herself. The sheriff (Clancy Brown) arrives and attempts to keep peace. Cassie persuades Jimmy to confront Broker who defends himself and inadvertently gains everyone's attention. Susan warns Broker that he needs to be careful. Cassie later goes to see her brother, drug dealer Gator Bodine (James Franco), and asks him to scare Broker. A few days later, Broker is physically threatened by two of Gator's thugs (Stuart Greer and Owen Harn) at a gas station, but he defeats them in a fight. The sheriff later stops Broker on the road to ask 'what he is', and Broker tells him it is a "need to know" situation. The sheriff tells him that he now has his attention, and drives off. The next day, while Broker is at horseback riding with Maddy, Gator breaks into their house. He finds Broker's old personnel file and figures out that Broker was the undercover cop responsible for Danny T's arrest. He and his girlfriend Sheryl (Winona Ryder) pass this information on to Danny T, who sends members of his gang to kill Broker. Broker learns that one of the locales is person of interest in narcotics trafficking. He finds Gator's meth lab and sabotages it. He sees his daughter's kitten that Gator stole from his house during the breakin. He's surprised by some of Gator's thugs who beat him and torture him, holding his head under water. They threaten his daughter and he is able to break free and defeat the four hench men. Broker goes home and prepares to leave town, but his daughter argues with him. Gater refuses to join Cyrus's attack on Broker's house, knowing that he'd be a prime suspect. The next morning Teedo arrives to help with moving the horses. Cyrus and his gang attack Broker's home. During a fight in the horse barn, Teedo kills one of the bad guys with a pitch fork. He alerts Broker by honking the horn of his truck but he ends up getting shot. Broker hides Maddy under the front porch. Five or six bad guys attack Broker in his house. He arms himself and after a brutal fight chases Cyrus who is about to shoot Maddy. He kills the man but is ambushed and while fighting him off, Sheryl tells Maddy that she needs to leave before the bad men kill her and abducts her in a Boston Whaler and takes her back to Gator's place. Maddy uses her cell phone to call her dad and describe enough details that he figures out where she is headed. Sheryl takes Maddy to Gator's meth lab and he threatens his sister. Cassie arrives at Gator's meth lab with news of the gunfight and tells him that Maddy has been kidnapped. Sheryl tries to get Maddy out of the boat and Cassie discovers that Gator has Maddy. She turns the meth lab's lights on, unwittingly setting off the booby trap that Broker had set up. The lab and much of the warehouse explode, and Gator watches his business go up in flames. Cassie tries to take Maddy, but Gator shoots his sister Cassie and forces Maddy into his Bronco. Broker arrives as the meth lab goes up in a series of secondary explosions. Driving the patrol car, he chases Gator to a bridge, which has been just closed off by the sheriff. Broker's car flips several times. Gator prepares to shoot him, but his daughter distracts him. Broker escapes from the wrecked vehicle and beats Gator up badly. He only stops from shooting Gator in the head when he sees his daughter watching. The police arrest Sheryl and Gator, while Teedo and Cassie are taken to a hospital. Broker visits a shocked Danny T in prison. He tells him he will be waiting for him when he gets out.
