A man, surrounded by birds, hangs himself to death at a cell site. Elsewhere, the scientist Vaseegaran introduces Nila, his new andro-humanoid robot, to a group of students. Suddenly, their mobile phones start flying, exhibiting bird-like characterstics. Before long, mobile phones all over Tamil Nadu begin to fly, leaving the state in chaos. At an emergency meeting initiated by the government, Vaseegaran enunciates that it is beyond conventional science to fight such a fifth force, and proposes reinstating Chitti, which was dismantled in 2010. However, Dhinendra Bohra, who lost his father Professor Bohra to Chitti's anger,[a] opposes, and the proposal is vetoed. Instead, the council decides to seek help from the military. However, the military is attacked by a swarm of mobile phones, leading to their deaths, coupled with severe casualties of workers, who were trying to rebuild transmission towers destroyed by the flying mobile phones.

The growing stream of mobile phones leave havoc in its path, killing a mobile phone wholesaler, a transmission tower owner and a telecom minister. To prevent further damage, Vijay Kumar, the Home Minister, unofficially gives Vaseegaran permission to rebuild Chitti again. Chitti traces the mobile phones, which have taken the form of a giant crow, and they fight. Chitti's battery becomes depleted, and it starts searching for a power source amongst three huge signal transmitters. To the surprise of Vaseegaran, the bird is unable to penetrate the field of transmitters and suffers damage when attempting to do so.

Vaseegaran sets for his lab, where he learns from Chitti that the bird is powered by a body of negative energy, or aura, of a single human being and numerous birds. The radiation from the antennae and other living organisms are positively-charged aura while the dead are negatively-charged, allowing the parabolic antennae to repel the bird. Had it entered the electromagnetic field, the combination of both auras would neutralise the bird, preventing it from reassembling. With this in mind, Vaseegaran replicates a smaller version of the antenna and sets off with Chitti and Nila to destroy the bird. When the neutralization process is about 50 percent, the bird weakens and transmogrificates into an egg, which then reassembles into a human, who calls himself Pakshi Rajan.

Pakshi Rajan used to be an ornithology professor who owned a small house in an open field where birds would come and live with him. The growth of the smartphone industry and the radiation from the newly set up mobile towers home gradually kill the birds due to radiation. Pakshi Rajan then visits the mobile phone wholesaler, transmission tower owner and the Telecom Minister(Kalabhavan Shajohn) and requests them to stop their activities but to no avail. He also organizes conferences and protests against mobile phones for the favour of birds, but no one supports him. Eventually, all his birds die, and a distraught Pakshi Rajan hangs himself to death from a mobile tower. His life energy, along with the dead birds, combine together to form an aura that manipulates mobile phones into any form by electromagnetic radiation.

Chitti empathizes with Pakshi Rajan, but asserts that he should not kill people. Pakshi Rajan declines, and retakes the form of a crow. Chitti reactivates the mini transmitters and neutralizes Pakshi Rajan, storing his energy in a containment circuit. This feat helps Vaseegaran's cause and the Home Minister legalizes Chitti. He also orders that andro-humanoid robots like Chitti be made for the Indian Army. Jealous of Chitti's eminence, a revenge-bend Dhinendra sneaks into the Artificial Intelligence Research and Development (AIRD) Institute and free's Pakshi Rajan's aura from the containment circuit. The aura enters Vaseegaran, enabling Pakshi Rajan to possess his body and attack humans. Chitti hesitates to kill Rajan, as it will mean the death of Vaseegaran as well. Taking advantage of this, Pakshi Rajan disassembles Chitti.

Nila takes Chitti back to the lab and rebuilds his body, replacing his microchip with the red chip created by Bohra,[a] which results in Chitti's violent configuration, version 2.0, being in control. Nila constrains him from harming anyone but Pakshi Rajan. Chitti then prepares for the battle, creating more versions of his likeness. Chitti also develops a romantic interest in Nila, but she advises Chitti to focus on their mission: to save Vaseegaran, and defeat Pakshi Rajan. Pakshi Rajan takes over a crowded football stadium and exposes Dhinendra to radiation, killing him.

Before PakshI Rajan can cause further damage, Chitti confronts him, having no qualms fighting him in Vaseegaran's body, since it has been configured as 2.0. However, its battery drains, and it rushes to the power station. Microbots resembling Chitti, each of version 3.0 and known as "Kutty", arrive mounted on white pigeons, distracting Pakshi Rajan and separating his aura from Vaseegaran. The microbots lead Pakshi Rajan's aura to the antennae, where he is eliminated, destroying the towers in the process. Vaseegaran recovers in hospital; he feels Pakshi Rajan was a virtuous person who was a victim of the corrupt society. He lays down that everyone should limit the use of phones, and feed birds whenever they get a chance. Chitti, now restored to his inceptive version, begins a relationship with Nila, to which Vaseegaran gives his consent.

In a post-credits scene, Sana asked Vaseegaran if it was possible for the mobile phones to fly again. Immediately, Vaseegaran's mobile fly out of his hand and morphs into 3.0; it says, I am your grandson.

The film begins with the recovery of Simar (Priyanka Chopra) and her husband Nikhil (Arjun Rampal) from a car accident. Simar is almost unscratched but Nikhil has amnesia, along with major physical damage. Simar is determined that Nikhil will get better and resume his life, and brings in the best surgeons to reconstruct his damaged leg and face, and then later helping him with his physical therapy. Although Nikhil is at first cautious, Simar's love and dedication wins him over. After six months of therapy he is released from the hospital and the couple return home. However, when Nikhil meets up with his old friends and goes through his personal files, he finds evidence that all was not well in his previous life. Now uncertain of his wife's true motives, Nikhil starts retracing his steps from the night of the accident, meeting with his old friend Tanya (Kim Sharma) who tells him that on the night of the accident, he had planned to confront and divorce Simar for infidelity. Nikhil hires a private investigator named Chamanlal (Saurabh Shukla) who discovers that the accusation is true, and Simar had been having an affair with a man named "Kabir". One day Nikhil secretly overhears Simar talking on the phone with Kabir, in which she insists that their relationship is over because she has fallen back in love with Nikhil. However, Simar agrees to meet Kabir one last time. Nikhil follows Simar to a secluded house, where he witnesses an apparent argument between Simar and Kabir. After a chase through the woods, it is revealed that Simar staged the entire thing: Kabir was never on the phone nor in the house, because he has been dead the whole time. Simar confesses that on the night of the accident, Nikhil had found Simar and Kabir together, and in his rage he killed Kabir. Simar wanted to protect Nikhil from the guilt, since she'd believed his amnesia had been a chance to start their relationship anew. Nikhil believes this story, and is temporarily reconciled with Simar. Nikhil is then contacted by Tanya, who claims that she has some new important information. When he goes to her house, he finds her shot dead. Nikhil informs Chamanlal that he has been having more vivid flashbacks to the night of the accident, and has an idea where Kabir was buried. They drive out and dig up the body, which has been preserved in the snow. However, the corpse's face is exactly the same as Nikhil's. "Nikhil" realises that he is in fact Kabir, and had been the one having an affair with Simar. Through flashback, it is revealed that the real Nikhil was emotionally abusive towards Simar. Kabir (Sudhanshu Pandey, but with Arjun Rampal's voice) witnessed Simar being abandoned by Nikhil at a party one night, and picked her up. They began their affair, but after a while Simar became too possessive and obsessed with him. On the night of the accident, Kabir had been trying to leave Simar, who threatened to commit suicide if he did. Just then Nikhil arrived and started a fight with Kabir, which ended when Simar killed Nikhil with her gun. They drove out buried the body in the snow, but on the way back Kabir blamed Simar for the murder and declared that they should go to the police. In the ensuing argument, Kabir lost control of the car, which resulted in the accident at the beginning of the film. In the present, Kabir is angered that his identity had been robbed by Simar, who took advantage of his amnesia and ordered the plastic surgeons to reconstruct his face in Nikhil's likeness. He and Chamanlal decide to bring Nikhil's body to the police, but are stopped when Simar arrives and shoots Chamanlal. Simar still wants Kabir to accept Nikhil's identity so they can be together, but Kabir refuses. Simar tries to kill them both in another accident so they can be together in death; Kabir manages to escape, but Simar does not. The final scene is of Kabir arriving at the police station, carrying Nikhil's corpse with him. The end credits begin over footage of Kabir explaining his story to the officers.
