Anil (Dutt), a successful businessman returns to his palatial home to find his wife Priya and their two sons are out. This sets off an extraordinary two-hour solioquy, shot entirely in the flat, describing the days when he first met his wife how they got married, when they had thier two children, the childrens first birthdays, their misunderstandings, his meeting of a new girlfriend, Salma, the nights when they fought, when they made love, and so on. We gather that his wife had many reasons for leaving and he takes this opportunity to accuse her in order to justify himself with her wedding sari. A depressingly uninhibited demonstration of male infantilism and neurosis, the film adopts a naturalist acting idiom played against props such as Mario Miranda cartoon characters is required. The films most interesting moment comes when Dutt is attacked by a bunch of toys berating him for his lack of concern for his family. The only living presence other than Dutt occurs at the end when Nargis, playing Priya, is shown in silhouette.

Disciplinarian Shanti Swaroop (Ashok Kumar) alienates himself from his wife Urmilla (Indrani Mukherjee); son, Ravi (Sunil Dutt), and daughter, Roopa (Yogeeta Bali). His wife passes away, and he marries another woman, Maya (also Indrani Mukherjee), who looks like his wife. Maya has an on-going affair with Heeralal "Heera" (Ramesh Deo) unknown to Shanti Swaroop. A fall from a staircase makes Shanti Swaroop lose his eyesight, and makes him totally dependent on his wife, and a nurse, Kalpana (Rekha). Blinded and unable to see reason clearly, he refuses to let his daughter marry Ram (Sharad) as he is poor; and asks Ravi to leave his house, when Ravi speaks out against Heera and Maya, thus leaving the ground wide open for them to attempt to initially permanently blind him, and then blame the nurse for this negligence.
