Satya Chaudhry, a woman dying of cancer, requests her childhood acquaintance, Roop, to provide companionship to her husband, Dev. Roop agrees on the condition that she marry Dev. Once married, Dev tells Roop that their relationship will be cordial and platonic. A depressed Roop takes solace in music, which she begins learning from the madam of a brothel, Bahaar Begum. She also begins working in her husband's publishing house. Roop expresses interest in writing about the condition of the locality in which the brothel is located, during which she interacts with a womanising blacksmith named Zafar.

Zafar wants to exact revenge on his parents, Bahaar Begum and Balraj Chaudhry (who abandoned Zafar after Balraj ended his extramarital affair with Bahaar) by seducing Roop, as she is married to Balraj's legitimate son, Dev. Roop misconstrues Zafar's intentions and falls in love with him. She also begins to develop a friendship with Dev, to Satya's pleasure. Satya dies after urging Dev to give Roop a chance and to forgive Balraj for his affair. In another effort to humiliate Balraj, Zafar instigates communal hatred in his friend, Abdul, by demanding for the partition of India on religious lines, which Balraj and Dev do not support.

When Balraj becomes aware of Roop and Zafar's affair, he confronts Bahaar Begum and Zafar. Bahaar, who disagrees with Zafar's approach, warns Roop. Heartbroken, Roop consummates her marriage with Dev, but insists that she would never be able to love him. As Abdul Khan's political stance gains leverage, riots against Hindus and Sikhs in the city take place, during which the Chaudhry's decide to flee to Amritsar with the help of Zafar. He confides in Roop that he eventually fell in love with her, despite his early intention. While boarding a train, Zafar is murdered by Abdul, as Roop and Dev escape. Ten years later, Roop and Dev, still in a loveless marriage, are interviewed about their experience by Aditya, a journalist documenting the partition.

Guddu (Ajay Devgn), a small time crook gets double-crossed by his own colleague, Pintu (Manoj Pahwa), after they have managed to get their hands on an illegal booty. Guddu & his sidekick Johnny (Sanjay Mishra) manage to trace his colleague but only after Pintu has given the information of the booty to three other groups i.e. Avinash (Anil Kapoor) & Bindu (Madhuri Dixit) - a bickering couple about to be divorced; Lallan (Riteish Deshmukh) & Jhingur (Pitobash Tripathy) – Fire Officers turned offenders & two weird siblings Aditya (Arshad Warsi) & Manav (Javed Jaffrey). All of them refuse Guddu's offer to distribute the money and the race to reach the booty first begins. Finally after many ups & downs all reach the designated place. But it's not as easy as it seems. Is there any truth about the hidden booty? Or all of them are being fooled? After a day full of life changing, near death experiences, will the adventure ever end or another one begin? Dev Narayan (Alok Nath) lives with his widowed daughter Laxmi (Aruna Irani) and her children Radha and Prashant. Dev also looks after two orphaned children, Gopal and Nita. Laxmi believes that Dev is taking more care of Gopal and Nita, so leaves the house taking her children with her. Laxmi soon spots an orphaned boy on the streets and takes him in. Radha forms a sisterly bond with him and names him Suraj. Suraj has a particular passion for singing. Years pass and Suraj (Salman Khan) is now a famous and popular singer. Radha (Madhuri Dixit) is particularly fond of him – in turn Suraj is grateful to Radha for contributing to his success. Meanwhile, Gopal (Shahrukh Khan) has become a wealthy business tycoon. When Laxmi is killed in an accident, Radha and Prashant (Atul Agnihotri) are taken to live in Gopal’s house, and also living with them is Nita (Suman Ranganathan). Gopal asks Radha to marry him and she agrees. Before their wedding, Gopal meets Suraj – Suraj asks Gopal to watch over Radha (as Suraj loves her like a sister). On their wedding night, Gopal asks Radha who she loves most in the world, she answers her mother and Prashant – Gopal is hurt that she did not mention him. As time goes on, Gopal starts to disapprove of two things. Firstly, he does not like the fact that he and Radha are supporting Prashant financially and secondly, he does not like that Radha is always on the phone with Suraj. After a misunderstanding, Gopal loses his temper with Prashant and throws him out of the house. Gopal soon suspects that Suraj and Radha are secretly seeing one another and consequently throws her out of his house. Radha goes to live with her relatives, where Prashant is also staying. Everybody thinks that Radha has simply moved out for a few days. However, when Gopal sends Radha a divorce note, Suraj realizes the situation. He and Prashant tell Radha they wish to speak to Gopal but Radha does not want them to do so. Suraj secretly holds a meeting with Gopal. Gopal arrives and angrily confronts Suraj. Eventually, Gopal pulls out a loaded gun and asks Suraj to shoot him. After an argument, Gopal leaves. Suraj now believes that he is the reason for Radha’s divorce and feels extremely guilty. He is now determined to set things right. Radha has now realised that Gopal was angry about her friendship with Suraj – she and Suraj agree never to meet again. Suraj explains the situation to his girlfriend Suman (Aishwarya Rai). Suman talks to Gopal and explains where he went wrong. Rahul (Shahrukh Khan) and Nisha (Karisma Kapoor) are members of a massive dance troupe. They are the best of friends, although Nisha is secretly in love with Rahul. Rahul announces his desire to direct a musical named Maya. The members of the troupe, including Nisha, have their doubts about the title character when Rahul describes "Maya" as a girl who believes in true love and waits for her prince charming who will surly turn up and take her away. But in today's world such girls rarely exist so they all doubt the concept.Meanwhile, Pooja (Madhuri Dixit) also has a passion for dancing. Having been orphaned at a young age, she has been raised by close friends of her parents. Rahul and Nisha go shopping for clothes one day. When Rahul is trying on some clothes, he starts whistling a tune and Pooja (who is also trying on clothes) pays particular attention to this tune. Rahul soon comes up with a script for the play he wishes to direct and shows it to Nisha who still has her doubts. On Pooja's guardian's birthday, there is a mix up – Pooja's family receives a parcel with sandwiches (which the dance troupe ordered) and the dance troupe receives Pooja's guardian's birthday cake. Rahul goes to Pooja's house to switch the parcels and starts whistling the same tune he whistled in the clothes shop – Pooja again pays attention to this. On Valentine's Day, Rahul and Nisha attend a party with the dance troupe where Rahul expresses his disbelief in love. Nisha is upset by Rahul's heartless attitude. Rahul accidentally calls Pooja's house and when she disconnects the phone, Rahul starts whistling the same tune and she again listens hard to it. On her birthday, Nisha gets drunk and tells Rahul she loves him – he does not respond as he does not love her in return. Pooja is soon taken to Germany by her guardian's son Ajay (Akshay Kumar) who has been in London for months. When the two return to India, just as Ajay leaves to fly to England, he proposes to Pooja and she accepts. During rehearsals for the play, Nisha injures her leg and the doctor says she cannot dance for a few months. Rahul needs a new woman to play the lead role in the play. He comes across Pooja dancing one day and believes she is perfect for the role. He begs her to come to their rehearsals and she agrees. Rahul and Pooja become close friends. Nisha soon returns from hospital and is upset that she has been replaced. Knowing that Rahul does not reciprocate her love, she decides to leave for London. Throughout rehearsals for the play, Rahul and Pooja find themselves falling for one another. When Rahul drops Pooja home one day, he starts whistling his tune making Pooja realise that she has fallen for the man she often heard. The next day, the two go to meet Pooja's old dance tutor Tai (Aruna Irani) who believes the two are blatantly in love. At the wedding of two members of the dance troupe, Rahul and Pooja confess their love for each other. On the day the play is to be run for the first time, Ajay arrives and tells everyone that he is Pooja's fiancé. Rahul is heartbroken but tries not to show it. Nisha, who has returned, notices Rahul's devastation and explains how she too was devastated when he did not love her in return. Rahul edits the end of the play to reflect his heartbreak. On the night of the play, Ajay plays a recorded tape where Pooja described how she felt about Rahul, implying that Ajay thinks Rahul and Pooja are meant to be together. Pooja now realises she truly loves Rahul and the two confess their love on stage as the audience applauds them. Also, backstage, Ajay ends up asking Nisha whether she is already married or not (implying he wishes to start a relationship with her).
